Abortion Is Essential

Three individuals are holding protest signs. One sign, held by a person in the center, reads "TAKE A STAND". The individuals are dressed in black, and the plain white background emphasizes the seriousness of their cause. Only their torsos and hands are visible, making their stance on abortion clear yet powerful.

On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutional right to abortion with its decision regarding Roe v. Wade. It was a significant moment in the feminist movement and the fight for gender equality. Overturned in 2022, the need for abortion remains clear. Post-Roe, how can we all take action to deepen our commitment to this fight?

  1. Educate yourself about the history of the reproductive movement. The Janes is a documentary that tells the story of the Jane Collective, a group of activists pre-Roe who built an underground network for people to access abortion. You can also stay up to date on both national and state abortion laws from the Guttmacher Institute’s resource.
  2. Volunteer for an organization supporting access to reproductive healthcare like Planned Parenthood or a local clinic. Abortion funds also use volunteers in multiple capacities, such as through logistical support.
  3. Share resources like The Repro Legal Helpline, Abortion Defense Network, INeedAnA.com, and Abortion On Our Own Terms with those who need them.
  4. Donate to a national or local fund. As barriers to access care increase, funds are a vital resource for those seeking abortions. Search the National Network of Abortion Funds database to find a fund.

Take Action! Fight for abortion access and reproductive justice: educate yourself about the history, volunteer at a clinic, share resources, and, if possible, donate to a fund.
