Our voices are working. Earlier this week, the largest streaming platform for PC video games, Steam, released previews of Active Shooter, a video game that allows players to act as a school shooter in a video game simulation. We rose up and told Stream that school shootings are not a “game” and certainly are not something companies should profit from. Because of so many of you taking to social media with #NotBuyingIt, yesterday they announced they won’t be distributing Active Shooter.
And over the weekend, Roseanne Barr used her Twitter account to spew racist vitriol. Thousands spoke up against Roseanne Barr, calling on companies to pull their ads from the Roseanne reboot, and in response, ABC canceled her show. We will not allow bigotry, hatred, and violence to pass as acceptable, mainstream language.
Thank you to everyone who helped hold these companies accountable for the messages and values they promote and propagate. This week, we’re celebrating the power of our voice. Join us by supporting media that reflects our values and use your purchasing power for good. Together, we will eradicate hate and build a world that recognizes and celebrates our common humanity.
