According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies can start detecting race-based differences at 6 months old, and children can begin to internalize racial bias by the age of 2. Talking to children about race is a vital step in laying the groundwork for them to recognize and understand equality, discrimination, and privilege, and the earlier parents are able to open that conversation, the better.
